Last year, the American EV manufacturer began opening up select Supercharger sites in a pilot scheme. This allowed all EV drivers to use the chargers as long as their vehicle had a CCS socket.
Now Tesla has gone a step further by introducing V4 Superchargers at the Tesla Centre in Tottenham, north London. The new V4 pods are specifically designed to be compatible with all EVs whereas the previous V2 and V3 chargers were only designed with Tesla cars in mind.
The V4 chargers are the manufacturer's first to have a screen and contactless payment reader. The cables are now longer too at 3 metres, which means the connector can reach most EV ports.
Tesla is planning on upgrading several locations so that they use the new tech and intend to build sites with V4 Superchargers going forward. Germany and the Netherlands have already started using variations of the same technology.
As with the previous Tesla chargers, you will need a CCS port to use V4. This means that owners of the Nissan LEAF will be excluded because these cars use CHAdeMO connectors.
