The ET5 Touring, an estate version of the ET5 sedan, and the EL6 SUV are now available for purchase in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
These EVs won't be seen in the UK just yet but it's expected they'll make an appearance at some point next year.
ET5 Touring
With families and active individuals in mind, the ET5 Touring offers a spacious boot with 450 litres of storage capacity, along with an additional 42 litres beneath the floor. The rear seats have a 40:20:40 split configuration, offering optimal versatility.
The ET5 is equipped with various practical features, including magnetic space straps, storage nets, and tailgate hooks designed specifically for ‘hanging up wetsuits’.
The interior of the vehicle features easy-to-clean fabrics, a 12.8-inch tablet display, and a 10.2-inch cluster. Features like "camping mode" have been combined with real-world accessories such as a torch and a panoramic glass roof.
For those who prefer indoor activities, the car offers luxurious amenities like a high-end audio suite, ventilated front seats with massage functionality, and a ‘smart fragrance system’.
The ET5 Touring is powered by a 150kW front induction motor and a 210kW permanent magnet motor on the rear axle, which can be coupled with either a 75kWh or 100kWh battery.
With a total power output of 360kW, the ET5 Touring accelerates from 0 to 62mph in just four seconds. The larger battery option provides a range of up to 347 miles (WLTP).
Nio's technology-led approach is evident in the ET5 Touring, with it featuring the NT2.0 operating system and the brand's ADAM Super Computing suite. These tech specs mean that the car has 23 drivers assist features as standard.
EL6 SUV
The Nio EL6 is a fairly large SUV; comparable in size to the Hyundai Santa Fe. It shares the same dual-motor, four-wheel-drive setup as the ET5 Touring and achieves a slightly slower 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds.
Nio has configured nine driving modes for the EL6 and, like the ET5 Touring, equipped it with a plethora of technology to assist the driver. Standard features include a head-up display and adaptive headlights.
The EL6's interior offers a driver's seat with 20 different adjustment options, ‘invisible’ air vents, and sustainable rattan elements. Nio's nature-inspired design approach is evident throughout the cabin and opening the nearly one-meter-by-one-meter sunroof allows occupants to connect more closely with their surroundings.
Battery swapping
What sets Nio apart from other EV rivals is its battery-swapping business model. In China, this service is gaining popularity with Nio claiming that a battery is swapped every 1.6 seconds. The brand’s first 10 million swaps took 1,506 days whereas its subsequent 10 million swaps took just 273 days.
Drivers can still charge their Nio EVs by plugging in, however, this method isn’t nearly as quick as going into a swapping station which can replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one in just 5 minutes.
Niro is aiming to set up more battery-swapping facilities across Europe with 16 built so far.
