The ICONIC SP concept is a new rotary sports car with a battery and electric motor.

Mazda’s association with the rotary engine is well-known, thanks to famous models like the RX-7 and Cosmo.

The Japanese manufacturer first unveiled what was the Vision Study Model concept in 2022 which it has now developed into a fully-fledged concept at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show alongside an updated version of the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5.

The dimensions of the ICONIC SP (measuring 4,180mm in length, 1,850mm in width, and 1,150mm in height) closely resemble the final FD-generation RX-7. The combination of rotary power and the SP's elegant design draws comparisons to Mazda's ‘90s sports cars.

Mazda recently introduced a new rotary hybrid, the MX-30 R-EV, which utilises a single rotor to act as a range extender for the electric motor. The ICONIC SP, in contrast, features two rotors and an electric powertrain. The rotary engine's versatility will allow it to run on various fuels, including hydrogen.

Mazda says that the ICONIC SP weighs 1,450kg, which is relatively lightweight for an EV. Power output is claimed to be 370bhp, marking an increase of approximately 100bhp over the final edition of the FD RX-7.

Stylistically, the SP is similar to the Vision Study Model concept, except for a revised headlight cluster. The sleek and slippery coupe profile along with the car’s size and shape all pay homage to the classic FD RX-7.

It’s not clear yet whether the ICONIC SP will reach production and when this version will be released. However, it’s worth remembering that the current MX-5 is almost a decade old and Mazda might decide that a production-ready SP is the ideal candidate to rejuvenate its line-up in the coming years.
