The seven-seat SUV follows on from the award-winning EV6 and will provide direct competition to the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz upon its release.
The new EV9 falls in line with Kia's ‘Plan S’ strategy that will see another 13 bespoke EVs released by 2027.
Official specifications have not yet been released, although it is understood Kia is targeting a 337-mile range meaning the battery capacity will be around 100kWh from launch.
The EV9 shares the same E-GMP platform as the EV6 and IONIQ 5 making it capable of 350kW rapid charging as standard. A choice of rear-wheel and four-wheel drive options should also be available across the selection of trims.
A GT-Line S variant is hoped to hit a 5-second 0-60mph time which will rival premium SUVs like the BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.
The exterior design of the EV9 is bold and blocky, sticking closely to the concept images that were released in 2021. Gentle curves flow into sharp, squared-off edges that can be seen wrapping around the rear of the SUV and over the wheel arches.
According to Kia, the striking polygonal shape gives the EV9 “exceptional aerodynamic efficiency”.
On the inside, a floating panoramic dashboard combines a 12.3-inch and 5-inch display that extends from the steering wheel to the centre. Physical buttons are kept to a minimum in order to create a minimalist and modern aesthetic.
The EV9 will be available in a six-seat option which allows the two seats in the middle row to swivel around and face the third row.
In the UK, deliveries of the EV9 are expected to begin at the end of the year with pricing likely to be in the region of £65,000-£85,000.
