New Hyundai IONIQ 5 N is Brand’s First Performance EV

This new sporty reworking of the IONIQ 5 sees the EV gain various innovative tech features and systems that puts the driver at the centre of the experience.

Sitting upon the same E-GMP as the standard model, the latest N trim has a bespoke all-wheel-drive powertrain and a larger 84kWh battery to manage the additional power. This gives the car 641bhp and 517 lb-ft of torque with an electric range of just over 200 miles.

800V charging architecture carries over onto this model too, meaning drivers can complete an 80% charge in around 20 minutes.

To counter criticism that EVs don’t provide an engaging drive, Hyundai has introduced an artificial gearbox into the cabin. The new N e-shift system mimics an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic unit to make drivers feel like they’re driving a high-performance petrol engine.

The IONIQ 5 N’s torque output changes as you switch gears with an added jolt to make it feel like the real thing. This is accompanied by realistic engine sounds to complete the sensory experience.

The exterior has undergone a dramatic makeover to set it apart from the standard IONIQ 5 models. The EV is 80mm longer and 50mm wider than before with additional mesh grilles and flaps to cool the bigger battery.

A lip spoiler at the front and a large diffuser element and roof spoiler at the rear help add to the aggressive aesthetic as well as providing extra downforce.

On the inside, there are plenty of subtle touches to reinforce the sporty N-themed styling. Bucket seats and a new steering wheel design are joined alongside chequered-flag motifs, illuminated logos and N pedal caps.

Full details have not yet been revealed, however, pricing is expected to start somewhere in the £60,000-70,000 bracket with deliveries ready for early next year.
