New British EV to educate next generation of drivers

A brand-new electric car that’s been designed and built entirely within the UK is ready to teach the next generation about road safety and electric motoring.

New British EV to educate next generation of drivers

The scaled-down EV is designed for children between the ages of 4 to 10 to drive around at Young Driver’s dedicated training sites. The car itself is called the Firefly Sport and has been built to provide children with a driving experience as close to the real thing as possible.

The Firefly Sport is built upon an aluminium chassis and has an all-round independent suspension with rack and pinion steering. Key designers behind the car include Steve Rawson, formerly of Aston Martin, as well as former Jaguar Land Rover and MG engineer Dr Ian Pogson.

Depending on the child’s age and ability the mini EV can reach a top speed of anywhere between 7mph to 25mph. Two recyclable 12-volt batteries power twin 24-volt electric motors too. The Firefly can be switched-off remotely and has an automatic cut-off if it senses obstacles in its path to ensure that drivers are safe.

Young Driver has 45 training centres across the UK with 20-minute lessons costing just over £20. The Firefly Sport can also be bought outright for families to use on private land. The car will be displayed at the upcoming British Motor Show on the 18th of August where pricing will be announced.
