Electric cars top March sales

For the first time, two electric vehicles topped March’s car registration list according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The cars in question were the Tesla Model Y and the Tesla Model 3. The Model Y outsold the model 3 by 7 units.

In total, 39,315 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered last month – this is a 79 per cent increase on figures from March 2021. 39,315 registrations is the highest amount recorded for a single month ever with 1 in 6 new car sales being fully electric.

The total of BEV sales in March surpassed the total racked up across the entirety of 2019. Plug-in hybrid sales (PHEV) dropped slightly however hybrid (HEV) sales rose by 28.4%. Overall, electrified vehicles made up more than a third (34.1%) of all new car registrations in March.
