Average Range For New Electric Cars Nears 300 Miles

That’s about three times the average distance driven per week and highlights the progress being made in battery technology.

For all available electric cars on the market, the average is now 236 miles.

The 2023 average is almost quadruple the range that was normal for electric cars in 2018. There were just 21 EVs available across every vehicle segment that year compared to the 80 EVs available across each segment in 2023.

New battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations are up by 25.6% compared to this time last year as new zero-emission options continue to increase. BEVs now make up almost one in four car models.

The SMMT’s analysis also shows that progress is being made beyond the BEV market with 94 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and 42 hybrid (HEV) models now available to choose from. As a result, electrified vehicles make up two-thirds of all models available.

Furthermore, there are 23 electric van models, 20 electric truck models and 14 buses powered by electric or hydrogen.
