Audi’s Urban Purifier aims to improve air quality

Audi is working with MANN+HUMMEL to develop new technology for their cars that filters dirty particulate emissions from the air as you drive and charge.

Audi’s Urban Purifier aims to improve air quality

Despite the rise in zero-emission electric vehicles, 85% of the fine dust particles found in road traffic are a result of brake, tire and road abrasion. These tiny dust particles are barely visible to the naked eye and are easily inhaled by pedestrians.

Audi’s Urban Purifier is installed at the front of the vehicle and collects particulates as you travel. This means that the filter not only collects particles from your car but also from other cars on the road around you.

The filter sits in the car’s existing air channels in front of the radiator. Few modifications are required and little maintenance is needed which makes the device a cost-effective addition.

Testing on the Urban Purifier is ongoing but there are hopes from those at Audi that this type of technology could become a legal requirement at some point in the future, especially as cities around the world struggle to meet the World Health Organisation standards for air quality.
