Audi reveal new Activesphere concept and plans for 20 new cars

The Activesphere becomes the fourth model in the ‘sphere’ series. The fully electric coupe SUV follows on from the Skysphere roadster, the Grandsphere saloon and the Urbansphere MPV.

The Activesphere is a versatile and high-riding coupe that sits on 22-inch wheels and measures 4.98 metres long. Audi is ambitiously aiming to get the concept into production in 2027.

What sets this new EV apart from other vehicles on the market is its ability to increase ground clearance at the touch of a button. The Activesphere’s suspension system can lift by up to 80mm whilst deploying extra body cladding to shield against knocks and scratches.

Another Activesphere party trick is its pick-up truck impersonation. Motorised bodywork allows the rear window to slide over the roof and a tailgate to extend from the back. This leaves the coupe SUV with a large flat loading space reminiscent of a pick-up.

Despite the futuristic features and design, the concept is based on Audi’s upcoming PPE platform, highlighting Audi’s intentions on getting a car like this into production.

The SUV can go from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and has a combined 436bhp output and 720Nm of torque thanks to an electric motor mounted on each axle. A hefty 100kWh battery pack ensures that the Activesphere can travel 373 miles on a single charge.

The Activesphere gets even more ambitious on the inside with its spaceship-like layout and hi-tech features. However, it’s worth noting that images of the interior should be taken with a pinch of salt as it’s unlikely a production version will look like this.

There are no physical displays or switches throughout the Activesphere interior. Instead, occupants are required to wear mixed-reality glasses that reveal hologram projections around the cabin that can be interacted with.

The Activesphere is part of a much broader product push from the German carmaker that wants to introduce 20 new cars over the next 3 years. Audi is looking for EV successors for their ICE models to carry the brand into the next decade.
