The ID.Life will sit beneath the popular ID.3 in Volkswagen’s line-up. As the car nears production it will most likely take either the ID.1 or ID.2 badge.
Volkswagen have battled hard to try and produce an electric vehicle that will come in at a market price of just £17,000 (€20,000), so much so that the production date has been pushed back a couple of years in the process of its development.
The concept is being described as a crossover by Volkswagen. It arrives in a 5 door layout with short front and rear overhangs.
One of the defining features of the ID.Life is its use of sustainable and innovative materials. Firstly, the bonnet and roof of the car is made from an air-filled fabric that is attached to the car by a zip. This is so that the roof can easily and quickly be removed for open-top driving.
Recycled bottles were used to create the roof and bonnet and wood has been utilised for the dashboard. The clear finish on the paintwork has been achieved through wood chippings and the tyres consist of bio-oil, natural rubber and rice husks.
When brought into production, the ID.Life will be the first Volkswagen to sit upon the new MEB Entry platform that will occupy new models from Cupra and SEAT too.
A 213bhp electric motor will power the front axle on the concept. This will help the car achieve a 0-62mph of just 6.9 seconds.
A 54kWh lithium-ion battery will also be able to provide a solid 248 mile range according to estimations. Fast charging has also been promised by Volkswagen ahead of its 2025 release.
The aim for the new ID is to create an EV perfect for urban lifestyle. The design has been styled with younger generations in mind and has been adapted to allow for social experiences.
An example of this can be seen with the inclusion of a mini cinema and gaming centre. A retractable projection screen will sit in front of the windscreen for use when the car is parked. The front seats can be folded flat to offer maximum space for the big screen. There’ll also be wireless phone charging too.
